The Herculaneum Fire Department is an all volunteer fire department that provides fire protection and rescue services for the City of Herculaneum, Missouri. Located thirty five miles south of St. Louis in Jefferson County, Herculaneum extends west of Interstate 55 and the is bordered by the Mississippi River to the east. Settled in 1808, Herculaneum claims to be the second oldest permanent settlement west of the Mississippi River and will be celebrating the city's bicentennial in 2008. Once the county seat, Herculaneum covers about four square miles and is home to approximately 2800 residents. Primarily a residential area, the city is home to one large industry and several small businesses.

Who Are We?
The Herculaneum Fire Department is an all volunteer fire department serving the City of Herculaneum. The department is organized as a private corporation and chartered through the State of Missouri. The department was founded in 1951 by members of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 5168. From the beginning, the department was supported by the sale of fire tags and various fund raisers. This method of funding continued until the town of Herculaneum was incorporated into a fourth class Missouri city in 1972. With the incorporation of the city, the fire department began the practice of contracting services to the city for a fixed yearly amount. At the present time, the city still contracts with the fire department to provide fire protection services to the majority of the city. Due to recent annexations to the west, portions of the city receive their primary fire protection services from a neighboring fire protection district. At the current time, the fire department is operating under a one year contract for an amount of $150,000. In the fall of 2007, the Herculaneum Fire Department will be hiring the first paid firefighter in the history of the department.
