Herculaneum

    High School Fire

Christmas Day 1947

The Herculaneum High School was destroyed by fire on December 25, 1947.  At the time, there

was no organized fire department in Herculaneum. Volunteers manning hose carts battled the fire

to no avail. Mutual aid assistance was provided by neighboring fire departments.  Following the

loss of the school, a group of interested citizens started to organize a volunteer fire

department for Herculaneum.

Garage Fire

March 13, 2001

The original call came in as a brush fire.  When crews arrived on the scene and notified Jeffco

that the fire was apparently a structure fire, a first alarm was struck.  The original firefighter on the

scene fought the fire by himself until other units arrived on the scene to aid in extinguishing the blaze.

Crystal City Fire Department arrived  on the scene to assist the Herculaneum Fire Fighters.  The Dunklin

Fire Department manned the engine house in case of other emergencies.
