Herculaneum Engine House

848 Broad Street

Herculaneum, Missouri

The Herculaneum Fire Department constructed Station #1 in 1970-1971, with the formal dedication taking place in March 1971.  The new fire station was built to replace the original fire house that had been used since the early 1950's.  The fire station was constructed by members of the fire department on weekends between the months of October 1970 and March 1971.  The fire station currently houses the offices of the department and six types of apparatus.  The original fire house is still used to house brush and rescue equipment.

Original Fire House

The original "fire house" for the Herculaneum Fire Department was an old wooden corn crib located on property belonging to the St. Joe Lead Company.  With the assistance of the company, an old church basement was eventually renovated and fashioned into the first true fire house in 1952.  The building housed one pumper, until a second bay was added in 1966.  The department also used a company garage across the street from the fire house to house the department's first "rescue" truck.  This building remained as the main fire house until 1971, when the current facility was built.  Today the building is used to house equipment for brush fires, water rescue and trench collapse/confined space rescues.

Prior to the formation of the Herculaneum Fire Department, fire protection in the town consisted of five hose carts situated in five "fire sheds" strategically placed throughout the town.  When a fire was reported, the St. Joe Lead Company would sound a siren a designated number of times to indicate what part of town the call was received from.  St. Joe employees would use company vehicles to pick up the hose carts and proceed to the fire.

Hose carts were stationed in "fire sheds" at the following locations:

    1.    Intersection of Station Street and South Main Street

    2.    North Main Street

    3.    Intersection of Cross Street and Station Street

    4.    Intersection of Long Street and Hill Street

    5.    Intersection of Clinton Drive and Reservoir Street
